Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Revealing details for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of characters who will branch out from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team features Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for players who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might seem out of place, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, invading Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each member has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the party enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that control the setting for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them few options but to head to the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Seekers and Strategists tables.

Viewers can expect discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
