Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
