Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
